Details on Notarization
Important note: The EAA is to be notarized in order to be most effective. An affidavit can also be used as evidence in a lawsuit. Most jurisdictions require the affiant swear under oath that the statements are true before signing the document. That signature needs to be witnessed and certified by a notary public, attorney or other public official authorized to take oaths. The witnesses to the affidavit DO NOT HAVE TO BE WITNESSES TO THE ABUSE! They are there to witness the signing of the document.
Where can I find a Notary?
You can find a notary public in:
o · city and town clerks' offices, courthouses,
o · local banks,
o · real estate, insurance or law offices,
o · travel agencies or,
o · in the phonebook.
o · on the internet
UPS stores are a great place to go to have the EAA notarized. You can have the form printed out there if needed. It is cheaper to email the form ahead of time to the UPS store you are going to They have notaries onsite, (Please check the times that they are there), and employees will also serve as witnesses to sign the document. You would then be able to send out your sealed EAA from there also.
Other information
There are traveling notaries. This may make it easier for victims if they are safe at their work or at a trusted friends house to have the two witnesses present and have the notary come to them.
